Hermosa Beach Firefighters Respond to Support Hermosa Beach Little League

Local Firefighters Foundation Participates in Exhibition Softball Game to Help Beleaguered Little League That Lost $10,000.

Hermosa Beach, CA – Last December, Hermosa Beach Little League board members learned the league was owed more than $10,000 from an online credit card processing company. They later learned that the company had been using owed money to cover its own operation costs. To date, Hermosa Beach and other community Little Leagues across the country are owed money from the company, some in excess of $100,000.

Fortunately, the 52-year-old league had cash reserves to cover operations expenses for the current season. However, those reserves needed to be replenished. HBLL Board Members decided to enlist the support of their local Firefighters to create a new fundraiser. “Night at the Ballpark” held at Clark Field on Friday, April 17th started with an exhibition softball game between the Hermosa Beach Firefighters and members of the Hermosa Beach Little League Junior Division.

Salt Creek Grille in El Segundo donated food and over 600 tickets were pre-sold through League families. The Hermosa Beach Firefighters Foundation sold limited edition Hermosa Beach Fire Jersey’s with a portion of the proceeds going to the Little League. The evening also featured a Movie and Camp Out.

Featured guests at the game were newly appointed Hermosa Beach City School District Superintendent, Dr. Bruce Newlin. In the 1950’s, Dr. Newlin was a pitcher in the Farm League for the Yankees. Also participating was former Los Angeles Dodger pitcher, Jason Butcher – now Vice Principal of the Hermosa Valley School. Hermosa Beach Fire Chief, David Lantzer and members of the Hermosa Beach Fire Department were also in attendance.

Says HBFA President, Brian Grebbien, “The Hermosa Beach Firefighters Foundation has a long history of supporting local area athletics programs. We had a great time playing softball against the League’s Junior Division. Those kids are strong and talented and certainly challenged us to play our best. We look forward to more opportunities to support the HBLL.”
